Unreal, the month of January went from one extreme to the next in a very short time!
From a green Christmas to snow just after New Years, then a week of frigid arctic air and then a warming trend. The extreme cold affected the operation of the transfer station, the running of the buses for the school and the operation of the arena. I sure am happy that the cold only lasted a week, it was a busy time keeping pipes from freezing and then keeping ourselves warm.
Definitely, all of the winter athletes will be terribly upset for the shortened season this year. Folks were happy to be out on the groomed cross-country tracks, ice fishing, snowmobiling and just ordinary playing in the snow.
It was a very sad time for the Mt. Timothy Ski Hill as they were unable to open this year. Arrangements will be made regarding the season passes, punch cards and gift certificates. The licensed restaurant opened up on Feb. 2, and will be operating on Thursdays from noon to 5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m. and lastly Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Come on up to watch the Super Bowl on the big flat screen TV’s on Sunday, Feb. 11. I have heard that Lori will be serving some pretty good pizza from 3 to 6 p.m.
The arena was super busy the weekend of Jan. 19 - 21 with the Oldstars Hockey Tournament. There were several hockey games with some exciting hockey action. One of our favourite volunteers, Fran Ellison, spent Saturday and Sunday at the arena selling 50/50 tickets and wouldn’t you know it—-she won one of the draws, sometimes volunteering really pays! The concession was up and running and interact was available.
There was more hockey fun on Saturday, Jan. 20 where there was a female exhibition game between the Shooters and Williams Lake. Definitely an exciting game and ended up in a tied game with the score 5-5!
Here is something to look forward to — Bev Fry is organizing a fundraiser for the arena on Saturday, Feb. 24 co-ed Fun Hockey Day, the cost is $20 per person with a guarantee of two games, possibly three and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This will be followed by a DJ dance and social at the Lac La Hache Community Hall, tickets will be $10 and will include snacks. There will also be a bar and the safe ride home program will be available. All proceeds will go to the arena, for more info please contact Bev Fry at 250-706-9611.
The Flea Market held on Jan. 28 was very well attended. It was a very busy day and all of the 25 vendors were kept hopping. The next Flea Market will be held on Feb. 25, stop on by and check it out. Guaranteed to find that special treasure!
The Lac La Hache Community Club will be holding its regular meeting on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. After a brief meeting attending to business, there will be the Annual General Meeting where there will be an election of directors and perhaps a new executive will be formed. Everyone is welcome to attend and the membership fee is very affordable at $5.
Another neat fundraiser is happening all month long at the Post Office. Just $2 will get you a sweet treat of various chocolatey goodness, each bag comes with a super cute Valentine’s Day card and message. Get one to give to your kids, your partner or even treat yourself. All funds will go towards the Canada Post community foundation fundraiser.
The crib tournament held at the OAPO Feb. 3 was a huge success. There were 68 players and all had a super great time and enjoyed the spaghetti lunch immensely, definitely a favourite event!
Lastly, I watched a video clip last week - I could not see Rick Duncan (from the Red Crow) but I could hear him talking. It sounded like he was interviewing a gentleman who said that he felt that Canada was truly a great caring country.
In the background, it looked like there was a wheelbarrow or a wagon full of cabbage. Rick is currently in the Ukraine helping to feed folks, the plan is to be there for four months. Unfortunately, I was unable to dig up any information as to where donations can be sent to help him while he is there.
