When a nasty flu bug went through 70 Mile House in mid-December, social gatherings were cancelled to stop the spread of the bug.

Ken Huber, chair for the 70 Mile House Community Club, said they cancelled the popular Pancake Breakfasts to help stop the spread of the flu.

He noted the club is going to try to have the breakfasts start on Feb. 3 which will run from 9 to 11 a.m. The meals will be by donation, and there will be door prizes and perhaps there will be baked goods for sale.

The Community Club will be having its AGM at the Community Hall on Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m.

The club hosted a Christmas Craft Fair on Dec. 2 and even though there had been a lot of craft events prior to the 70 Mile House event at the community hall, Huber said it went well despite being four tables fewer and the crafters were happy.

The vendors go to many of the same events and become friends. At the 70 Mile event, vendors who weren’t selling wares at the Dec 2 craft fair gave other vendors a break during the event or helped sell their friend’s crafts.

There was a pleasant, friendly atmosphere at the craft fair.

Huber said the club is still looking for funding to complete some more upgrades to the community hall.

“I got the quotes and I’m filing for grants,” he said, adding that fundraising is important.

SMAC felt community flu impact

Seventy Mile Access Centre (SMAC) had to shut events down in December due to the number of residents who were suffering from the flu and to protect the volunteers who run the operation.

The first Coffee’s On of 2024 was held on Jan. 9.

The local social event was started at SMAC but has moved to the Community Hall. It’s an opportunity for area residents to spend time with friends and meet new friends,

They have some soup, buns and desserts that people bring to the weekly event. People who can afford it, support Coffee’s On by making a donation.

SMAC spokesperson Sally Watson said the Coffee’s On on Feb. 13 will be a Volunteer Appreciation event. It starts at 11 a.m. and is a potluck affair.

Unfortunately, the SMAC building was broken into when it was closed to the public and the scoundrels robbed the non-profit society.

Watson said SMAC doesn’t have insurance coverage for theft, but they have installed security cameras so they can find out who is breaking into the facility and stealing things.

“Public community shaming will be happening if we find out who’s stealing stuff from us.”

Lots of things to do in 70 Mile House

Eddy’s Bar and Grill is offering entertainment.

Eddy kicked off the new year by hosting a painting night and a trivia night.

Both of these events are very popular and a lot of fun.

Trivia Night is slated for Jan. 18 and Feb. 1 and every other Thursday and the fun starts at 5:30. Teams of up to six people are allowed, and everyone is welcome.

Jack Keough and the Repeat Offenders will be playing on Jan. 27 from 1-3 p.m.

This free event will have people reminiscing some great songs we all loved in years past.
