Happy New Year everyone! Wasn’t December an unforgettable month? This is the first green Christmas I have experienced living here in the Cariboo since 1997.

December was very mild, with a bit of snow which then got washed away by the rains. Then that mess turned into sheets of ice, high winds and then even a power outage on Christmas Day night which lasted until 9 a.m. on Boxing Day. Like I said, unforgettable!

For a couple of people, the weather did not stop them from looking for ice and/or snow so that they could enjoy their hobbies. Kyle Swayze travelled to the Chilcotin and went ice fishing, and caught a nice one too! Kendra Drebit had a fun time playing in the snow with her snowmobile, my goodness in one picture it looked like she was doing wheelies!

The macrame class held at the Senior Centre was well attended, all seemed to enjoy learning the basics of macrame. At the end of the class, everyone had a special snowflake that they had made to take home. The class was taught by Tobi Welychka of the Mad Knotter and there was much interest expressed for future classes.

The extra Flea Market held on Dec. 10 had some different vendors and a bit less traffic, but was still lots of fun. Santa had a ball taking pictures with kids, pets and even some adults! The next Flea Market will be held on the last Sunday of January, the 28th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. See you then – I will also be in attendance! If you would like to book a table call Fran at 250-396-4003.

I can’t help but feel so proud of our community, everyone gave so generously to the Christmas Hamper Campaign. There definitely were more folks that needed some extra help this year, 28 food hampers were handed out. Thumbs up to the Lac La Hache Volunteer Fire Department for coordinating this campaign and to everyone who helped out – great job!

The Seniors Centre did themselves proud by hosting a terrific Turkey Dinner on Dec 16. Many thanks to all who supported the centre and to the awesome team of volunteers who put this event together and had it run so smoothly. There was great interest in this dinner, 40 dinners to the seated reserved seats and then 15 take-out orders. There may be more dinners planned in the future so stay tuned!

Santa Claus came to the Public Skating session on Dec. 17. There were quite a few skaters present but I was surprised to hear that it was not overflowing since this was a free skate. A little gal by the name of Emma won the Christmas Bear – congratulations!

There seemed to be a lot of people a bit upset that the arena was closed during the holidays – did they forget that volunteers have family and friends they like to visit with during the holidays or events that they wanted to attend? The arena still operated for the Old Timers Hockey League and the LLH Co-ed Hockey the last week of December as they had players that could operate the Zamboni to clean the ice. The great news is that the arena was rented out quite a bit during the holidays for private groups and birthday parties.

The Hungry Bear also changed their hours of operation open Tuesday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Bobbie Crane Art Studio art classes start with regular drop-in sessions every Thursday starting Jan. 11.

The next regularly scheduled Community Club meeting will be held on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and at that time we will be collecting membership fees of $5.00 for 2024.

Chad Everett works at the Garbage Dump in Lac La Hache and looks after the share shed. Several years ago, Chad made friends with a crow which he named Buddy. It seems like Buddy has returned for a visit and has brought along a friend. Chad reminds everyone to take special care dropping things off at the share shed and to keep it tidy.

Here is something to look forward to – There will be another crib tournament at the Pioneer Centre on Feb. 3. Doors open at 10 a.m., play commences at 10:30 a.m. spaghetti lunch is at 12 p.m., all that fun for $20.00 If you need more info, please call Paul or Mary at 250-396-4093.

The OAPO has recently started a web page, on there is a calendar showing all the events scheduled. It appears that there is quilting going on Jan 26 to 28. At this time I have no more info if it is private or actual classes. Refer to the new web page for updated news.
