Editor,

I want to thank you for the well-presented article in the 100 Mile Free Press this week articulating my journey with cancer including the key message of appreciation for the strong and caring support of family, friends, and local practitioners after my diagnosis. The GP of Oncology, my regular GP, the nurses, technicians, and people in 100 Mile House and Williams Lake who have supported me over the past couple of years have had a huge impact on my recovery.

Being able to access oncology services locally, without having to travel to “outside” communities, has meant that I was greeted by a familiar, smiling face, someone who knew who I was and knew my story, helped put me at ease and gave me comfort. Sharing gardening tips and a laugh or two while on an IV drip somehow makes the “medicine go down” as they say.

We want to attract doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals to our town. It is important to let folks know that in our town you are appreciated and that we notice how much of a difference your expertise makes in our lives. My experiences with Age-Friendly taught me just how important relationships are in healthcare, and I am so glad to live in this rural area at this time in my life.

Yours sincerely,

Lea Smirfitt
