The South Green Lake FireSmart organization is preparing to increase its effort to encourage local property owners to FireSmart their homes/cabins and properties.

Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) Bob Bell, who is also the South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief, and LFR Ken Alexander, author of this column, are working to get local property owners to make their homes/cabins and properties more resilient to wildfires.

"Even with the recent rain shower we have been having, the forest that nudges up on our community is still tinder dry,” Alexander said.

At a recent South Green Lake FireSmart meeting, there was a conversation about having self-assessment presentations in the community's neighbourhoods.

Bell said, “It had also been mentioned about leaflet distribution on FireSmart information door to door.”

Thanks to FireSmart Neighbourhood Champions Rita Dixon, Lu Smith and Pat Graham, who are putting together the self-assessment packages, the packages will be handed out to all of the property owners' homes/cabins and properties on July 12, starting at 10 a.m.

The champions, their FireSmart committee members and other volunteers will hand the packages out to the property owners. If the owners are not home, the packages will be attached to the doors. If the properties are gated and locked, the packages will be attached to the gates.

If you have any questions or didn't receive your package, contact LFR Ken Alexander at 250-456-7496 or 1-250-319-8085, or topdrawer1948@gmail.com

Please do not throw these packages away. Following the information in the packages will help you save or limit the damage to your home/cabin and properties if there is a wildfire. Only you can make your piece of paradise more resilient to wildfires.

Only you can make sure your children and grandchildren have an opportunity to enjoy nature, play in the lake and walk in the forests, and if they are lucky they will see or hear the wildlife that call South Green Lake home.
