ALEXANDER: Enjoy Community Day at South Green Lake Fire Hall

Ken Alexander's regular column to the Free Press

The South Green Lake Fire Hall is the place to be for family fun on Aug. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ember – the FireSmart mascot – will be attending. People will be able to take photos of their family members with the lovable fox, so bring your cameras. Ember doesn't talk so please don't ask her questions.

The South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department (SGLVFD) Auxiliary is putting on the annual event and there will be something of interest for every member of the family.

The SGLVFD will have its trucks on display in the Fire Hall parking lot. Everyone will be able to check them out. Visitors will be able to use a fire hose to spray water at a target, and there will be a relay race people will be able to compete in.

The good times will begin when visitors enter the Fire Hall. They will be able to get a free door prize ticket.

There will be face painting, a youngsters craft table, and a fish pond. There will also be a fireworks and cattle fence information table. The folks at that table will also be collecting donations.

There will be a sprinkler demonstration so visitors can see how the sprinklers are great as a last line of defence if we have a wildfire in our community. Del Westfall said he would be taking orders for sprinklers.

There will be pies on sale for $10 apiece. Only apple pies will be available, and they are delicious. There will be a raffle table with five baskets. Visitors will want to make sure they get their favourite raffle basket tickets.

Hot dogs and drinks will be available by donation. Ice cream cones and cups will also be available by donation.

The South Green Lake FireSmart crew will have a couple of tables and Local FireSmart Representatives Bob Bell (Assistant Fire Chief) and Ken Alexander (writer of this column) will be answering questions about the importance of self-assessments.

It is a follow-up of the local FireSmart crew members who recently delivered self-assessment packages at every lot number in the South Green Lake community so property owners can learn how to make their homes, cabins and properties more resilient to wildfires.

Celebration of Life for Susan McKie

There will be a Celebration of Life for Susan McKie at the Green Lake Snowmobile Clubhouse at 176 Green Lake South Rd.

It will start 3 p.m. on Aug. 3.

Susan Lynn McKie was born on May 16, 1951 and passed away on Oct. 1, 2023, after a courageous battle against cancer.

When you first met Susan, you immediately knew she was a special person with her big smile and twinkling eyes. You knew you wanted to become her friend. Susan was friendly with everyone. She never had anything bad to say about anyone.

Susan retired to Green Lake in 2007.

Susan and her husband Peter McKie quickly joined the Green Lake Snowmobile Club when they arrived at the lake and Susan immediately started to help with the social events and carried on with her volunteerism for many years.

She really enjoyed the dances.

Susan also filled in as secretary for the snowmobile club executive when needed. In 2008, Peter and Susan joined the South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Hall.

Susan became the society treasurer and was the society president for three years. She still looked after the books until the fire department became a Thompson-Nicola Regional District Fire Hall.

Susan always helped with the pie making, the garage sale and Open Houses during Peter and Susan's 14 years and Green Lake.

She also worked part-time at the 70 Mile House Post Office for many years.

Susan loved her life at Green Lake and all of the friends she made!
