Dec. 15, 1933 – April 21, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather Mervin Vermette, after a brief illness in Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on April 21, 2011 at the age of 77. Mervin was born and raised in Prince Albert, Sask. He attended school there and later worked with his dad, Joe, in the bush, cutting and making poles for sale. In 1951, Mervin joined the army and it was on a leave in 1952 that Mervin would meet his future wife, Pauline Shewchuk. Mervin went overseas to England and Germany, and in 1955 after he was discharged, he and Pauline married on Nov. 20, 1954 in Prince Albert.
Mervin worked for M&K Plumbing & Heating, and in 1965 he and Pauline bundled up their family of five children and moved to 100 Mile House. It was here that their last child was born in 1966. Dad worked with Flannery Construction, and later worked for Canim Lake Sawmills. He mainly worked in the forest industry, falling and running a loader. Always a sports fan, Dad played hockey in his younger years and always enjoyed watching hockey, football and especially curling. He enjoyed his fishing trips to Bella Coola, fishing with his grandsons, gardening and reading “real books” as he said. Mervin is survived by his children: Myrna (Stanton) Lamb, 100 Mile; Wendy (Mel) Warkentin, 100 Mile; Lyle, 100 Mile; Adrian (Maureen), Kamloops; Kelly, 100 Mile; and Kim Webb (Harold), Bayview, Nova Scotia; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren with two new additions on the way; his step-daughter Darlene and her family in Saskatchewan, three brother-in-laws: Walter Basaraba of Prince Albert, Bill (Kathy) Shewchuk of Prince Albert, and Harry Shewchuk of Shipman Sask.; sister-in-law Emily Paulin (James) of Thunderbay, Ont.; aunt Irene Vermette of Prince Albert and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mervin was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Pauline, in 2004; grandson Terry Lamb in 1991, his parents, Joe and Mary Vermette, 11 brothers and two sisters.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Creekside Seniors Centre from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A private family interment will follow.
