John Simituk Sims, former editor of the simplymastery, charter member of the 100 Mile House Rotary Club, and long time resident of 100 Mile House, passed away peacefully in Vancouver on November 30th in his 85th youthful year after a short illness. He was a member of the 100 Mile Emissary community and relished his years living close to nature in the Cariboo, an inspiration for many of his songs and compositions.

John developed his artistic skill in journalism writing for the Ladner Optimist, the Calgary Herald, and the Toronto Star, as well as  CBC Toronto. He is even better known for his lyrical and often whimsical compositions, most notably “Home Is Where You Are” and “Sunrise,” both often heard at Martin Exeter Hall. His children’s musical, “Please Don’t Sneeze,” is still being performed.

John spent the last 15 years of his life in Vancouver enjoying walks on the beaches and swimming in English Bay. He delighted in having coffee with special friends at Granville Island, where he shared his keen wit and sense of humour, revealing a unique perspective on people and world affairs. He never grew old.

As a friend of John says, “His musical talent through composing is as obvious as John’s smile, quick turn of phrase, love of people, life, and cheerful jousting conversation.  He brought light from a unique direction.”

John is survived by his brother Bob Sims in Vancouver,

and his nieces Cindy Beaudet in Calgary, and Wendy Dallaway in Phoenix, Arizona.
