July 5, 1955 - November 19, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jim Kulyk on November 19, 2024, at the age of 69. Born on July 5, 1955, in New Westminster, Jim's life was defined by hard work, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.
In 1962, Jim's family moved to the Cariboo, where he spent his formative years working on the farm. There, he learned the values of confidence, perseverance, and a strong work ethic that would shape the rest of his life. It was also in this small community that Jim met the love of his life, Lorraine, in grade 9. From that moment on, they were inseparable. Jim and Lorraine married in August 1974, beginning a journey of 50 years filled with love and devotion.
Jim's work career began with various jobs at local resorts and gas stations. Once he earned his driver's license, he took on a night shift job driving a gravel truck at a local gravel pit while attending school during the day. After graduating in 1973, Jim briefly worked in Mackenzie, but his heart led him back home to be with Lorraine.
In late 1973, Jim began his lifelong career at the Weldwood sawmill. Over the years, he held various positions, but it was in his Millwright apprenticeship in 1976 where he truly excelled. A true Jack of all trades, Jim could fix anything, solve any problem, and make almost anything work again. He loved his work and was well-respected by his colleagues. In the final years of his career, Jim transitioned to a maintenance supervisor role. His workmates held him in high regard, and Jim, a naturally social person, greatly enjoyed his interactions with them.
Jim loved the ocean. His first experience of Bella Coola was in 1987, with Captain Reg Campbell and close friend Pat Wingert. He was hooked. Every summer since he'd plan three trips, taking friends along to enjoy both the fishing and the companionship. The surprising total is 111 weeks, over two years of his life enjoying his biggest passion.
After retiring, Jim joined a few clubs and took pleasure in running into old friends on walks, enjoying long conversations. Jim was also an accomplished woodworker, building everything from furniture to a wooden skiff. He took great pride in his creations.
Jim's love for his family was evident in the countless hours he spent helping with home repairs, building projects, and working on vehicles. He eagerly passed down his vast knowledge of all things mechanical to the next generations, becoming an invaluable resource for anyone who needed help. His generous nature and willingness to help others made him a beloved figure to all who knew him.
Jim will fondly be remembered by the Loon Bay resort camping crew, who shared many stories, enjoyed countless happy hours, and formed genuine, lifelong friendships. The memories of these good times will forever hold a special place in the hearts of his friends.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Lorraine, children Sheri (Jason) and Jason (Natalie), and three cherished grandchildren, Nadia, Odin, and Marko. He was predeceased by his parents and other family members, but he leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness.
Jim passed suddenly, and his loss is deeply felt by all who loved him. His family will forever treasure his smile, upbeat nature, and the many wonderful memories he created. He will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
A private service will be held to honor Jim's life.
May Jim rest in peace, surrounded
by the love he gave to all of us.
