March 20, 1941 - July 22, 2023
In loving memory ~
With a heavy heart, we would like to announce the passing of Gary Carter Schmidt on July 22, 2023, in Williams Lake, B.C.
Gary was born March 20, 1941, to Ralph and Ivy Schmidt in New Westminster, B.C. He was the middle of three children. He leaves behind his older sister Clara John (Alan) who he loved dearly and was predeceased by his younger brother Bill Schmidt (Sharon) who was his mentor and best friend.
When Gary was about 11 years old, his father Ralph decided to sell his successful pheasant farm in Burnaby to pursue his dream of cattle ranching in the B.C. Interior. A suitable property was finally located in the Kettle River Valley north of Westbridge. The family move meant Gary had to complete his education through correspondence courses. And as the eldest son, Ralph demanded a lot from young Gary to help establish and operate the ranch. Gary developed a love of machinery and mechanics which he carried with him on his many lifetime adventures. Gary had various careers in logging, construction, contract dump operator and gold mining. With the help of his brother Bill, Gary was able to settle and spend the last 30 years of his life in the 100 Mile House area. Gary was very proud that he was able to purchase 10 acres and a mobile home in Forest Grove and had no debts.
Gary thought the world of his family and friends and was a very kind, loving and gentle soul. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews. If you received a birthday or Christmas card, it most likely would have been from Gary Schmidt. Gary chose to be cremated and his ashes are to be placed in the OK Falls Cemetery.
