Six members of South Cariboo Search and Rescue (SAR) spent last weekend in Mackenzie with SAR personnel from across Northern British Columbia at a Justice Institute of B.C. Organized Avalanche Response Team Member Course.
South Cariboo SAR manager Val Severin says they received training in a variety of snow stability tests, and learned how to identify and travel in avalanche terrain, avalanche companion rescue and organized avalanche SAR techniques.
She adds SAR members performed a snow-stability test, called a Rutschblock Test. For more information about doing the test and interpreting the results, Google Rutschblock Test.
“It can help to determine if a slope is safe to travel across,” Severin concludes.
