As school wrapped up last week, the BC Highway Patrol gave students at Lac La Hache Elementary School a chance to find out just how fast their fastball throws are.

Members of the BC Highway Patrol attended the school's year-end Sports Fun Day on Tuesday, June 24. Throughout the day, 40 students stepped up to the plate and whipped baseballs at the officer, who was protected by a net. While they did, the officer used a radar gun to measure the throwing speed of each pitch.

The fastest pitch from a boy was 74 km/h, and the fastest girl was right behind at 69 km/h, Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said. The kids were great. One of them told his friend that if he hit the police car, he might get arrested.

While testing their velocity, the students were also given an explanation on how radar guns work. McLaughlin said the officers also allowed a few of the students to try using the radar gun on their friends.

Obviously, the vast majority of BC Highway Patrol work is enforcing the law and using radar for real, McLaughlin said. But we love an event like this. It’s a great way to connect with the community and let kids know that police officers still like to have a laugh.
