38 Years Ago (1980): An “extremely light” winter snowpack coming after the previous summer’s prolonged drought led to speculation about serious effects in the form of water shortages, according to C.H. Coulson, head of the surface water section of the hydrology division of the Ministry of the Environment. At the time, he said that the province had been experiencing “less than average snowpacks” for the past four years.
29 Years Ago (1989): $850,000 was available for livestock producers wishing financial assistance for the previous year’s drought. Producers from the Cariboo District if they were eligible if they had a minimum of 50 breeding animals and if they purchased a minimum of 50 tons of feed in either of the two previous years. Producers in the designated drought area would also be eligible for deferral of income from drought-induced sales of breeding livestock.
21 Years Ago (1997): The sixth break-in in 10 months at Birchview Interiors led to a police chase that ended in the arrest of three suspects. Three mal culprits attempted to flee in a pickup truck took off on foot when their path was blocked by a police cruiser. One was apprehended by police after a brief foot chase, a second was arrested on nearby Blackstock Road with the assistance of four members of the public and a third was arrested later at the Chevron gas station.
11 Years Ago (2007): Then manager of Total Pet, Dave Mingo, threw his hat into the ring for the city councillor position left vacant by former city councillor Mitch Campsall. Mingo said he wanted to tackle escalating property crime and as well as keeping the district’s youth busy. “I’d like to see our recreation facilities enhanced as much as we can,” he said. “We very much need a skateboard park and I’m definitely going to be a strong supporter.”
7 Years Ago (2011): An application for a new FM radio station in 100 Mile House was denied by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commision (CRTC). Co-Applicant Gerhard Loeffler applied for the licence to broadcast a format of new country and rock/pop music as well as more than 20 hours per week of news, weather, sports and community events. Vista Radio Ltd.’s opposing intervention indicated the new station would threaten the viability of its AM station.
