Customers help RCMP nab robbery suspect

Attempted robbery foiled by customers

Around 7:40 p.m. on July 21, 100 Mile RCMP members were called to a robbery that had just occurred at The Bargain Shop in Cariboo Mall in 100 Mile House.

A male suspect had entered the store wearing dark clothing and a homemade balaclava and he attempted to rob the clerk by telling her to give him all the money. When she didn't comply, the suspect went behind the till and began pulling it from the counter.

Two customers heard the ruckus and came to the aid of the clerk who had called 9-1-1. The suspect then ran from the store with the customers following.

The witnesses saw the suspect remove the mask while he was fleeing. The customers got in their vehicle and began patrolling the area for the suspect and located him a short distance away.

He had discarded his clothing in an attempt to change his appearance. Police located him two blocks from the scene, and he was positively identified by the witness.

Thanks to the quick thinking of the customers inside the store, the suspect was not able to overpower the clerk. No weapon was produced and no one was injured in this incident.

Police are recommending charges of robbery and disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence against the 31-year-old 100 Mile House area resident.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information regarding this crime to contact the 100 Mile House RCMP Detachment at 250-395-2456 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
