The 2010 Citizen of the Year nominations are in and
the lineup of community-minded superstars has been forged.
South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) manager Christine Jordaan says it was down to the wire on Jan. 31 when the last of the nominations and support letters came into the chamber office.
There has been a tremendous response to the call for nominations this year, she adds, with a total of 11 nominations being submitted.
“I think this wonderful response we’ve had to the call for nominations is a reflection of the appreciation within the community for the many committed community builders who go above and beyond in their day to day lives. In a small community such as ours, it is individuals like these nominees who keep us glued together and moving forward.”
The nominees are (in alphabetical order) Graham Allison, Arla Driver, Robert Fry, Carol Main (in memoriam), Chris Nickless, Fred Nohels, Vic Popiel, Marg and Martin Sarich, Caroline Sharpe and Walter Sherry.
The nomination packages have been handed over to Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett who is a former
top citizen award winner and is the chair of the Citizen of the Year selection committee.
She will convene a committee of past winners to review the nominations and select the winner for 2010.
The selection committee will evaluate the nominations and letters of support to get a feel for nominees’ contributions to the South Cariboo community, Jordaan says.
“All of the nominees are recognized as valuable members of our community who go above and beyond their call of duty to help make
the South Cariboo a wonderful place to live.”
The winner will be announced at the SCCC’s 17th Annual Business Excellence Awards gala evening on April 16.
The evening will be an entertaining and enjoyable event honouring not only the 2010 Citizen of the Year but also local business excellence with ten categories of awards, Jordaan explains.
The South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting nominations for the Business Excellence Awards, with the deadline for submission being March 4. Nomination forms are available at the chamber office,
fascination street toys & games, the 100
Mile Free Press and the South Cariboo Visitor Centre.
