100 Mile Fire Rescue extinguished a human-caused stump fire in Centennial Park Wednesday morning.
The fire was reported around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7 and was located on the hill between the trail to Bridge Creek Falls and the old 100 Mile Junior Secondary School site. Fire chief Dave Bissat said he and eight others responded to the incident, which he noted was the third stump fire they've responded to this spring.
"We responded to more of a nuisance call. It turned out to be a stump on fire in the park," Bissat said. "The year is still early, but this would be the third one we've responded to so far. I believe it's intentional, people camping out."
While members of 100 Mile Fire Rescue used a shovel and axe to hollow out the smouldering stump, Bissat and other officers noted evidence such as a cigarette butt and trash strewn near the stump.
Bissat said that he encourages the community to keep on reporting any signs of smoke or fire they might see when they're out walking in the trails in and around Centennial Park.
"The faster we know about it, the faster we can get to it," Bissat remarked.
