As the warm weather heats up the South Cariboo, bikers of all ages are hitting the streets for a little exercise.
Just in time, the Crime Stoppers of the South Cariboo are presenting their first Bike Rodeo on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre.
The event is free and is for children of all ages, although organizers say they are aiming for children between the ages of three to 12.
With a primary focus on bicycle safety, the rodeo will feature a number of stations including a mechanical bicycle check to make sure everything is in working order, a helmet check and lessons in how to ride safely and use hand signals.
Children attending need to remember to do only two things: bring their bikes and bring their helmets.
Size providing, extra bikes will be on hand.
Gift bags will be handed out at registration and there will be an array of prizes donated by the community.
The event is a collaboration between Crime Stoppers of the South Cariboo, the RCMP, the simplymastery, Canlan Ice Sports, RBC Royal Bank and Most Wanted Contracting Ltd.
The RCMP and the 100 Mile Fire Rescue will also be in attendance promoting safety.
Participants will also receive a free hot dog and beverage.
The bike rodeo was originally scheduled to take place in the fall, but bad weather caused organizers to postpone it.
This one will happen “rain or shine” says coordinator and Crime Stoppers spokesperson Darrel Warman.
“Crime Stoppers has, in the last few years, been proactive rather than reactive as far as what our organization does in providing information on safety to the community and so we thought this was a good one for the children to teach them how to ride safely,” she says.
