Less waste going to landfill

ASHCROFT — Despite the Village of Cache Creek’s efforts, the volume of waste sent to the landfill continues to drop.

Last year, Metro Vancouver (MV) shipped 296,742 tonnes shipped (December’s figures aren’t available yet), but are down from the annual average of 456,734 tonnes.

Mayor John Ranta asked for and received clarification regarding a memo from MV to Wastech, which advised Wastech to be prepared to dispose of up to 700,000 tonnes in 2011.

The memo specified Wastech should divert “sufficient tonnage” to keep the

Burnaby incinerator operating at maximum capacity (280,000 tonnes), send 200,000 tonnes to the Vancouver Landfill (Burns Bog in Delta), and the rest should be hauled to Cache Creek.

Metro Vancouver noted it was cheaper to divert waste to Delta than to Cache Creek.

Less waste sent to the landfill means reduced hours and shifts for the Wastech employees.

Dogs attack four-year-old

TERRACE — Two dogs are set to be destroyed after they attacked and injured a child to the extent she required surgery.

The two bull mastiffs bit a four-year-old child as she was playing outside on the property Jan. 18, said police in a release Jan. 21.

The dogs, who were in a separate enclosure, wounded her arm and head when they pulled her arm and torso through the fencing, said police.

Paramedics rushed the child to Mills Memorial hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.

The two dogs were relinquished by the owner to Thornhill animal control and are to be destroyed.

There is no further action being taken by police at this time.
