The Ladysmith Chargers U13 softball team won gold at a tournament May 16 to 18 in Richmond, finishing the weekend with a 5-1 record.
The eight-team tournament, hosted by the Richmond Softball Association, featured U13C teams—house-level teams made up of players under the age of 13 as of Jan. 1. The Ladysmith team is made up of 12 players from Ladysmith, Chemainus and Crofton.
The tournament began with three seeding games, followed by a day of finals.
The Chargers went 2-1 in the seeding round, losing to a Vancouver team and entering the finals ranked fourth.
“We really came together as a team with three strong wins on Sunday,” said Chargers coach Anthony Searle. “It was truly a team effort with every player making an important contribution somewhere along the way.”
The win was particularly meaningful as it marked the first tournament victory for all players.
“They were super happy and proudly wore their medals on the ferry ride home,” said Searle.
