New data from United Way BC reveals an increasingly significant gap in B.C. when it comes to menstrual equity.
The agency’s needs assessment shows that more than 14 million menstrual products will be required by people who can’t afford them this year.
The United Way Period Promise campaign runs the month of May. In Greater Victoria, residents can help Fill the Bus on Saturday (May 24) from 10 a.m. to 1p.m. at Tillicum Centre in Saanich. Every donation of tampons, pads, menstrual cups, or period underwear raises awareness, reduces stigma, and tackles the vulnerability caused by period poverty.
Pacific Blue Cross will also match monetary donations to a maximum of $25,000, doubling donors’ investments.
In 2024, United Way BC collected more than 500,000 products and distributed them to a record 130 community partners.
This year, the goal is to collect beyond 550,000 in a bid to eradicate period poverty in British Columbia.
