Three overnight closures coming to Highway 1 east of Lytton

Three 10-hour closures taking place between May 28 and June 4 to facilitate work at new Tank Hill overpass

There will be three overnight closures of Highway 1 east of Lytton between May 28 and June 4 to facilitate construction of a new overpass at Tank Hill (pictured).

Drivers who will be using Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon need to plan for more overnight closures at Tank Hill, 14 kilometres east of Lytton.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has announced three more closures of the highway, each one lasting 10 hours. The upcoming closure dates are:

Wednesday, May 28 starting at 7 p.m. until Thursday, May 29 at 5 a.m.
Thursday, May 29 starting at 7 p.m. until Friday, May 30 at 5 a.m.
Tuesday, June 3 starting at 7 p.m. until Wednesday, June 4 at 5 a.m.

The closures will facilitate the placement of girders and concrete panels on the new structure at Tank Hill, where work is ongoing to build a highway overpass above the CPKC mainline. The site was badly impacted during the November 2021 flooding in the region, and a temporary at-grade highway crossing has been in place there since early 2022. It is now being replaced by the overpass, with work scheduled to be substantially complete later this year.

Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon will be closed for 36 kilometres in both directions during the closures. Checkpoints will be set up at Lytton and Spences Bridge to provide travellers with information about alternative routes. The closures will be in place from the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 12 (Lytton) to the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 8 (Spences Bridge).

While regular vehicles will not be permitted through the area during the closures, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is working directly with emergency services to facilitate access for emergency vehicles through the site.

The Gladwin area and Nicomen River Road will remain accessible to local traffic. All other traffic will be detoured via Highway 12 and Highway 5. Traffic-control guidance will be provided through portable message boards in Lillooet and Ashcroft.

Drivers travelling between the Interior and Lower Mainland can take Highway 3 or Highway 5 as alternative routes. Drivers are advised that Highway 8 from Spences Bridge to Merritt is not available as a detour route during the closures.

For up-to-date information about this closure, as well as road conditions on alternative routes, travellers should monitor the weather forecast and visit www.drivebc.ca.
