On May 8, Pacifica Housing, in partnership with the BC Coalition for Safe and Sustainable Supportive Housing, will issue a call to action to improve safety at supportive housing projects in B.C., following a recent death in the community.
On April 26, a man was found dead in a unit of Victoria's Waterview Supportive Housing building on Gorge Road East, which is now ruled as a "suspected homicide" and is being investigated by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.
The man's death prompted non-profit housing leaders to call "for an immediate ban on weapons and other changes to help housing operators enhance the safety and security of their residents, staff and surrounding communities," according to a news release.
On the morning of Thursday, May 8, the chairs of the Vancouver Island and the Interior chapters of the BC Coalition for Safe and Sustainable Supportive Housing will share more information around the call for action.
The BC Coalition for Safe and Sustainable Supportive Housing is a coalition of 21 supportive housing providers in the province that aims to promote a unified approach to building capacity to meet the needs of the most vulnerable communities, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the people who use their services, their employees and volunteers and the wider community.
