The time has come for those hoping to be Sooke’s next councillor to make themselves known.

As Sooke’s byelection draws near, the candidate nomination period is officially open. As of May 27, eligible candidates interested in running for office can submit a complete candidate nomination package until June 6 at 4 p.m.

The byelection will fill the open council seat left by now Juan de Fuca-Malahat NDP MLA Dana Lajeunesse, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of B.C. last year.

Candidate nomination packages can be found online at sooke.ca/elections or can be picked up in person at the Municipal Hall.

To be eligible to run in the byelection, prospective candidates must be 18 years or older, Canadian citizens who have lived in B.C. for at least 6 months immediately before the nomination date and must not be disqualified by law from being nominated, elected, or holding office.

Following conclusion of the nomination period, candidate information will be posted to sooke.ca/elections by 5 p.m. on June 6.

Byelection advanced voting will take place on July 2 and July 9 ahead of the general voting day on July 12.
