Seven contenders vie for council seat in Sooke byelection

The open seat formerly belonged to Dana Lajeunesse

After months of anticipation, the seven candidates vying for Sooke’s open council seat were officially announced on June 6 — though, it will still be some time until the open council seat is claimed.

A municipal byelection will be held in Sooke on July 12 to fill one vacant seat on the District of Sooke Council. The seat was vacated by former councillor Dana Lajeunesse when he took a role in the legislative assembly of B.C. as an MLA for the Juan de Fuca-Malahat riding.

The candidates for the upcoming byelection are: Shaun Burns, Nick Dickson-Wilde, Herb Haldane, Nathan McKeown, Elaine Price, Helen Ritts and Katherine Strongwind.

Candidate declarations for the 2025 byelection were made at an official verbal declaration at Sooke’s Municipal Hall on Friday, June 6, at 4 p.m., upon closure of the nomination period.

Advanced voting days will be held on Wednesday, July 2 and July 9 at Sooke Council Chambers at 2205 Otter Point Road.

There will be a special voting opportunity on Thursday, July 3, at Ayre Manor Lodge, located at 6744 Ayre Road, for assisted living and complex care residents only.

The general voting day will be held on Saturday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Edward Milne Community School, located at 6218 Sooke Rd.
