A Parksville resident reported being scammed more than $1,100 responding to a text supposedly from the Canada Revenue Agency, asking for their Social Insurance Number and a further link to a bank website. With the supplied information, the fraudster gained access to the resident’s bank account.
During the week of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5, the Oceanside RCMP received 218 complaints. Some of the other incidents included:
Two rubber mats were stolen from the lobby of a commercial building in the 200 block of Island Highway East in Parksville on Dec. 31. The same day, a vehicle was was reported damaged when hit by fireworks in the 1400 block of Madrona Drive in Nanoose Bay.
On Jan. 2, a break-and-enter into a cell tower site was reported, with damage to security cameras and a gate in the 3800 block of Melrose Road in Qualicum Beach. One day later two Fat Bike 3s were reported stolen from the back of a vehicle in the 800 block of Mulholland Drive in Parksville. Also Jan. 3, four recycling bins marked with BBCC were reported stolen in the 200 block of Lions Way in Qualicum Bay. A vehicle was noted leaving the site.
