Own an e-scooter? Remember these City of Penticton safety tips

With electric scooters becoming more popular, City of Penticton officials have issued several tips on how riders can stay safe on the road.

In a press release on May 9, the city stressed that electric kick scooters — battery-powered motorized devices with a platform for standing and handlebars for steering — are not permitted to be used on sidewalks.

When riding on a multi-use path — like the promenades along Skaha and Okanagan lakes or the KVR trail — remember to slow down and "be mindful of others," it added.

B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation and Transit also issued requirements for the operation of e-scooters:

• Use a designated cycling lane if available or stay as far right as practicable on the road;
• Riders must be a minimum of 16 years of age;
• Safety helmets are required;
• No passengers are allowed

"When using these paths on a bicycle, skateboard, or scooter, reduce your speed and take extra care around pedestrians," the city's press release reads. "Use a bell, horn, or your voice to announce your presence before passing."

Anyone walking is also reminded to be aware of the devices and share the space.

In February 2024, the city officially made electric scooters "street legal," allowing third parties to make them accessible for use at transit hubs and parking lots.

Penticton is one of 26 B.C. communities to allow the use of electric scooters on its roads. Nearby communities to also recognize the devices as "street legal" include Oliver, Osoyoos, Kelowna and Vernon.
