North Saanich updates Tatlow and Deep Cove traffic calming project

Traffic calming recommendations will enhance safety for pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists

The District of North Saanich has updated its Tatlow and Deep Cove Neighbourhood Traffic Calming project, aimed at reducing traffic speeds and improving community safety for all users.

Initially introduced in April 2024, the project aims to raise driver awareness in an area shared by pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists.

The district's latest plan incorporates several key recommendations for Tatlow, Birch, Wain and Downey roads, following resident feedback and feasibility studies.

A primary focus is installing gateway signage on Deep Cove and Tatlow roads to signal drivers that they are entering a traffic-calmed area.

Digital speed readers could also be installed to monitor traffic conditions and promote awareness.

One significant change being considered is reducing the speed limit from 50 to 40 km/h on various roads within Deep Cove.

Additionally, pedestrian comfort and safety features will be improved, including a raised crosswalk equipped with pedestrian-activated flashers and a widened gravel shoulder to provide ample walking space.

In Deep Cove, white edge lines may be added three meters from the centre line on Wain Road to visually narrow driving lanes, creating the perception of narrower lanes to encourage slower speeds.

Tatlow Road could also benefit from an off-road trail within the boulevard, strategically placed to minimize impact on vegetation and infrastructure.

These recommendations are currently open for community feedback and comments.

The Active Transportation Plan, adopted by the district in 2021, initially identified the need for traffic calming measures in the Deep Cove neighbourhood and along Tatlow Road.

District staff will collect and review all feedback before presenting final recommendations to the council, along with detailed implementation plans at one of the future regular meetings.
