North Saanich Mayor Peter Jones has officially proclaimed May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the critical importance of sun safety.
The proclamation, signed on May 1, emphasizes the dangers of over-exposure to UV radiation, a leading cause of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
Alarmingly, skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer, with projections indicating that one in six Canadians born in the 1990s will develop the disease in their lifetime.
Mayor Jones’ proclamation also acknowledged the work of the Save Your Skin Foundation, a not-for-profit organization committed to combating various cancers through nation-wide education, advocacy, and awareness campaigns.
