B.C. Housing is leasing 78 supportive housing units at a vacant former care facility in the hospital district.
In a release on Tuesday, July 16, Ravi Kahlon, minister of housing, said the units at the former Travellers Lodge on Nelson Street will not only provide a roof overhead for residents, but also a number of other support services. These include life-skills training, employment assistance and counselling, as well as physical and mental health resources.
"This is another example of the rapid response of our government and the City of Nanaimo to help people who are experiencing homelessness," Kahlon said.
Rent will cost $500 per month for the units, which will be allocated to people currently in shelters. Adults older than 19, including "those who have expressed a desire to minimize exposure to alcohol and substance use" will be prioritized.
To support the project, the City of Nanaimo is contributing about $394,000. Full funding details are expected once the site opens, which is planed for early 2025.
"Providing safe and secure housing for our community members who need it most continues to be one of city council's top priorities," said Mayor Leonard Krog in the release. "These new supportive homes at Travellers Lodge will offer stability and a sense of belonging, helping residents to thrive."
The building has self-contained studio units with private bathrooms, as well as common amenity spaces and gardens. Rent will include two meals a day and laundry services. A non-profit operator, yet to be selected, will operate the site and provide staffing during all hours.
The lease is for three years.
