The Midsummer 8K, hosted by the Kelowna Running Club, hits the pavement on Sun., July 13 at Boyce-Gyro Beach.

With over 35 years of history, the race is once again the BC Athletics Championship event for the 8K distance.

Held every year since at least 1988, the Midsummer 8K has become a staple in B.C.'s road racing scene. But this year’s edition is shaping up to be extra special.

“Being recognized as a BC Championship race will definitely attract a strong field from across the province,” said co-race director Josh Wyatt in a media release. “It makes us very proud to host events in our city that meet international standards.”

Wyatt and fellow race director Janice Bradshaw have spent months getting the race certified to World Athletics standards, a requirement for its championship status. The event is designed for runners of all levels, from seasoned racers to beginners.

“This race has always been about community,” Bradshaw said. “It doesn’t matter whether you finish in 30 minutes or an hour and 30 minutes, everyone is welcome, and everyone’s experience matters.”

All proceeds from the event support the UBCO Track and Field team, coached by local Olympian Malindi Elmore. Elmore, who’s run the race herself, will be on hand to help host the kids' run, cheer on participants and support her team.

Registration is open until July 12. To sign up or learn more, visit the Kelowna Running Club website.
