With the boating season officially underway, Port Sidney Marina is prioritizing boater safety by hosting a free Safe Boating Awareness event on May 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will be held under the tent dock at Port Sidney Marina.
"This is the first time this event is being hosted on the Island – it’s usually held on the mainland," says Rick Siddon, general manager at the marina. “There’s a large number of boaters here, and we have one of the highest boat occupancy rates in Canada."
Emergency responders, boating educators and safety experts will be present at the event, offering valuable information and engaging activities to kick off the summer season safely.
Siddon highlights the importance of wearing life jackets, particularly for novice boaters or those with limited swimming experience, because water temperature and currents can pose significant dangers, making life jackets a crucial safety precaution.
He also stressed the importance of boating sober.
"Alcohol and boating just don't mix," he stated, highlighting the risks associated with impaired operation on the water.
Safe Boating Awareness is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Anyone interested in learning more about boating safety is encouraged to attend.
