The 100 Mile House Soccer Association is in acute need of board members.

The association was unable to form an executive at their annual general meeting on Friday, Feb. 23. While acting president Amy McKean has taken over as president and her sister Sherry has become vice-president, the board is still missing a treasurer and secretary. They have until March 23 to find candidates for these positions, otherwise, they will not be able to run the season.

“We ended up with two of our four executive key people being unfilled. We’ve had some people who are interested and hopefully, we’ll be able to put people into those positions,” McKean said. “So we’re still touch and go for this season but we have a pretty positive outlook on where it could be in these next few weeks.”

This year McKean said there has been a lot of interest among parents and players for this season. However, after several board members had to step down last year the executive has been hollowed out. While they have three members at large they still need a treasurer to look after the money and a secretary to oversee administration.

Following the AGM McKean admitted she felt a little defeated and disappointed. However she’s determined to make this season work and during the Soccer Info Fair held the next day, she passed on the gravity of the situation to her fellow parents.

“Larger cities have other opportunities. They have local gymnastics, dance and football. Coming from the Coast myself 10 years ago a main concern was what do my kids have to do,” McKean said. “We all know have fewer opportunities here so why take away one more? For the kids who super enjoy soccer, I would hate to not see it in the community.”

Prospective board members would be required to attend one meeting a month. McKean said it’s not a big time commitment but one that will benefit hundreds of children who play soccer every summer.

In addition to these key roles, McKean is looking to fill other spots on the board. These include the coaching coordinator and social coordinator. While these positions aren’t required to run the association, McKean said that “many hands make light work.”

McKean also welcomes any parents or community members with an interest in coaching to get in contact with the association. While they need a minimum of one coach per team she is hoping they’ll be able to have two per team this year.

Those interested in joining must pass a criminal background check and take a coaching course the association offers. Anyone looking to join the board or become a coach can reach out to the association via the association’s Facebook page and office.omhsa@gmail.com.

Once she has candidates for the remaining executive positions McKean plans to call a vote within the next two weeks to make their appointments official. She said an exact date will be announced based on the schedules of the new members.

“I don’t want to wait until the last minute, the sooner the better,” McKean remarked. “In order to have B.C. Soccer licensing we have to have it completed before our actual startup.”
