The 100 Mile House Fire Rescue responded to a call at the Cariboo Gardens apartment building on Cedar Avenue at approximately 2:30 p.m on Feb. 27.
Loranne Lewis was helping her son move out of the apartment building when she heard a smoke alarm go off in a different room.
“We looked around but we couldn’t see anything but you could smell it. A really strong smell. My son thought it was in one apartment but it wasn’t so he phoned 911 and they told him to pull the main one [alarm] and get everybody out,” said Lewis.
She couldn’t explain what the smell was, other than it didn’t smell like a result from cooking gone wrong. No smoke or flames were seen.
“100 Mile House Rescue Crews were unable to locate the source of the smoke despite searching every unit in the building and occupants were able to go back into the building,” said Roger Hollander, 100 Mile House Fire Rescue Fire Chief.
Upon their arrival, occupants were already evacuating the building due to the fire alarm being activated.
There were no injuries and 14 firefighters were on the scene with assistance from the RCMP and ambulance services.
The fire department would like to remind the public to remain calm, leave immediately towards the safest exit and call 911 from outside the building and do not re-enter the building unless instructed by the fire department.
