The new playground in McAdam Park was officially opened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 9.
Duncan Mayor Michelle Staples cut the ribbon at the playground, which the city earmarked $420,000 for in August, along with council members, staff and a student from the nearby Parkwood Academy childcare service.
“It’s all about you,” Staples said to the dozens of youngsters who were waiting patiently to try out the new equipment.
“Now you’ll have a place to play while your siblings play football and some other sports. I’d also like to thank Kal’s Replay and the Social Planning and Research Council of B.C. for providing grants for the project.”
While McAdam Park currently has many amenities, including well-maintained green spaces, public washrooms and playing fields, there was no community playground there before.
During the community engagement process in the development of the city’s McAdam/Rotary Parks Master Plan that was completed in 2021, the community requested the installation of a new playground in McAdam Park as there are currently limited playgrounds for young children in that part of the city.
The new playground includes play areas for toddlers and younger children, a separate play area for older children, swings, accessible playground elements, and accessible pathway loops.
The city also intends to install a water fountain, picnic tables benches and trees in and around the new playground.
