The District of 100 Mile House is holding a contest to determine the name of its street sweeper.

The contest, which is being held through the district's Facebook page, has five possible names that participants can choose for the sweeper: Dirt Reynolds, Dirty Harry, Obi Wan Cleanobi, Rolling Thunder and Sweeping Beauty. These five names were chosen after a period where anyone could submit names to the District of 100 Mile House before March 31, with those names being selected for a public vote. There had been no rules on voting, and over what names could be submitted.

"We were impressed with the community engagement and creativity - a big thank you to everyone that took the time to submit their ideas," said Tammy Boulanger, the chief administrative officer of the District of 100 Mile House - adding that there had been around 51 submissions.

Boulanger explained that the district held the contest because it had been a "great little positive way to engage the community in a fun little contest."

"Our community services crew works very hard at keeping 100 Mile House looking its very best and everyone is always happy to see the sweeper out. It is a sign of spring!" Boulanger noted.

The public vote will be conducted through the comments section of the Facebook post announcing the five finalist names.

According to Boulanger, the sweeper is a 2020 Elgin Crosswind, which is "built to provide a reliable, versatile sweeper for municipal roadways."

"It has a heavy-duty diesel engine, a 12 foot wide sweep path and a large capacity hopper to provide extended sweeping time," said Boulanger, adding it was purchased by the district in 2020 for $320,261.

The winning name will be announced by the district on April 11.
