Think you’ve got talent, Victoria? The Roxy Theatre is handing over the mic – and anything goes.

The iconic venue at 2657 Quadra St. is hosting its first-ever Talent Show Social on Thursday, July 3, offering a night of community, creativity and unexpected moments on stage.

The 19-plus event will feature between eight and 12 live acts, with everything from music to magic expected on the bill.

“We originally thought of doing an open mic,” said Matthew Wright, district manager for Golin Cinemas. “But our house manager, Andrew, suggested we frame it more like a talent show so we could open it up to a wider range of performances.”

So far, the lineup includes rappers, comedians, and a classical guitarist.

There’s also a potential breakdancer still to be confirmed, but Wright said the stage is open to virtually anything – as long as it fits into the 10-minute time limit per act.

“It’s a low-stress, welcoming atmosphere,” Wright said. “We’re encouraging performers to come and share their talent in a safe, friendly environment. It’s not competitive, and there’s no judging panel – just a supportive audience and a great vibe.”

Thursday’s showcase marks the second live event at the Roxy in recent months, following a rowdy 150-person crowd at their country music night in May featuring Rob Curtis.

That success has the theatre looking at more ways to engage the community beyond indie film screenings.

“We’re definitely interested in offering more live events going forward,” Wright said. “It’s about finding the right opportunities and building a bit of momentum in that space. But the interest is there, and we’re excited to grow it.”

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show running from 7 to 9 p.m.

Performers are still welcome to apply through an online submission form, while tickets are just $5.

“We really want it to feel like a social night out,” Wright added. “Whether you’re up on stage or just enjoying the show, it’s a great way to support local talent and connect with people.”

Victoria’s Roxy Theatre isn’t the only one on Golin’s radar for live entertainment. The company also owns Capital 6, opened Duncan Theatres in late 2024, and is set to open Campbell River Cinema on June 27.

The Roxy Theatre first opened in 1949, celebrated its 75th anniversary last summer, and has long held a reputation as one of Victoria’s more eclectic venues.

“Regardless of whether we do more talent shows or not, we want live events to be a part of our repertoire going forward,” Wright said. “We’re keen to offer more nights like this for people in Victoria to come and enjoy.”

The Roxy may be old, but nights like this prove it’s still a spot where community and creativity come first.
