Filmmakers Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer will be in 100 Mile House to show their latest movie Just Eat It – A food waste story on March 3. They will also be the guest speakers at the free screening.

Area residents are in for a real treat as filmmakers Jenny Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin will be in 100 Mile on March 3 to give a talk after the screening of their latest movie Just Eat It – A food waste story.

The tour of the Cariboo was organized by the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society (CCCS) of Williams Lake.

Rustemeyer and Baldwin, who also created The Clean Bin Project, will screen and discuss the film with Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School students in the afternoon.

That evening, they will be doing the same for the general public in the Multipurpose Room at the South Cariboo Health Centre, 555 Cedar Ave. (behind 100 Mile District General Hospital), starting at 7 p.m.

Both local events are being co-sponsored by the South Cariboo Sustainability Society and the CCCS.

Wasted food is a huge issue because around 40 per cent of the world’s food is wasted, while many people do not have enough to eat let alone consume nutritious food.

Rustemeyer and Baldwin – both filmmakers and food lovers – dive into the issue of food waste from the farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that have been discarded.

In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are shocking.

Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.

Baldwin's addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue and the "thrill of the find" has unexpected consequences.

Featuring interviews with author, activist and TED lecturer Tristram Stuart, food waste expert Dana Gunders, and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe.

According to the Globe & Mail, it's "Lively, funny and thought provoking."

Admission to the March 3 event is by donation and refreshments are provided. For more information, call 250-791-7284.
