Members of the Cariboo Artists’ Guild (CAG) recently threw a farewell dinner for Grace Mills-Hodgins, a longtime member who is moving from her home on Tad Lake near 100 Mile House to downtown Vancouver.
It was a night of fun and laughter, says Mills-Hodgins, who was also presented with a lifetime membership certificate to CAG.
“It was very much appreciated by me. They were very generous in their remarks. It was lovely.”
Mills-Hodgins has been a member of the CAG since the 1980s. The group promotes art in the 100 Mile House area by planning and hosting different retreats and events and supporting both aspiring and accomplished artists.
“It’s a very communal and supportive group.”
She also talked about the CAG’s annual Fine Arts Show and Sale that runs each summer and is open to any artist who’s a member of the group.
“That gives you an idea of the nature of the group. It doesn’t matter if you’re just beginning or if you’re a professional selling artist at other galleries. It’s all shown.”
The whole thing is based around supporting each other as artists,” she adds.
The 33rd Annual Fine Arts Show and Sale was held at the Parkside Art Gallery in 100 Mile House from July. 26 to Sept. 7.
The CAG was “a natural draw” for Mills-Hodgins, who has done a variety of artwork throughout her life.
“At times I’ve been a potter, a painter – water colour, acrylic, oil and encaustic work – I’ve done some sculpting. I don’t know what I haven’t done.”
Although she’s relocating some 450 kilometres away, Mills-Hodgins sees herself returning to the South Cariboo often to visit friends and family in the area.
“I’ve got so many friends after all these years up here it will be a strong draw for sure.”
