From a Circle features new paintings by local artists Amy Cadrin, Helen Kellington, Neil Pinkett and Cindy Wickingstad.

Their dynamic display is at the Parkside Art Gallery, at 401 Cedar Ave., until May 21.

These four artists work in acrylic, watercolour, oil and mixed media.

With distinctly different styles, they have chosen to create a unified core to the show by each challenging the other artists to respond to a theme. Hence, the 16 paintings making up the nucleus of the show are responses to the themes: The Moon; Reflections; Cover Versions and Cast a Circle and Tell a Story.

“I try to capture moments in time,” says watercolour artist Kellington, “using the reflections from sunlight and water.”

Wickingstad primarily uses acrylics; she uses bright colours and bold brush strokes.

“My favourite subject is trees; they are a bit funky, and I like painting mandalas.”

The artists got together because of The South Cariboo Health Foundation Studio 2 Studio Art Tour at the 108 Mile Ranch last fall, Wickingstad says, adding they decided to have a cohesive show and invited Kellington to join them.

Pinkett has been drawing since childhood – mostly in ink and oil pastel. He moved into acrylic and oil painting a few years ago

“I’m drawn to trees and reflections in water,” he says.

Cadrin says she has recently busted out of the box. The artist adds she used to do a lot of detailed art, and now she is having fun with more abstract art.

“Whatever comes out of your head you can put down on canvas. I’m enjoying being out of my comfort zone.”

All of the art displayed contains elements very different from each other and yet form a circle: the sphere of the moon; the curving shapes of reflections; the disc hidden in the album sleeve; and sacred geometry.

Beyond this, each artist has been free to be creative and showcase a broader selection of their latest creations.
