“Being part of LVI allows me to contribute to something bigger than myself,” said Thompson, LVI board chair. “It’s fulfilling to see individuals step into their potential, develop confidence, and become stronger leaders.”

As someone who values lifelong learning, leadership development and community impact, Robert Thompson was drawn to Leadership Vancouver Island.

Leadership Vancouver Island is a non-profit organization that has served more than 375 Vancouver Island alumni and organizations through its highly regarded and uniquely effective training program. Some of the benefits to individuals include personal development and career advancement, while employers have enjoyed increased employee retention and enhanced leadership skills among their employees.

Thompson said LVI is more than a leadership program, it’s a network of individuals who care deeply about their communities and personal growth.

“It offers a space to develop skills, connect with diverse perspectives, and be part of a supportive group of change-makers,” he said. “Whether you’re looking to grow personally or professionally, LVI provides the tools and connections to make it happen.”

Thompson added that he also appreciates the relationships he’s built through the LVI program. Working alongside passionate volunteers and seeing the tangible difference they make in local communities keeps him engaged and inspired, he said.

This year, LVI is celebrating 20 years of developing leaders for outstanding personal, business and community leadership. A public 'Coming Home Celebration' will take place April 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nanaimo Golf Club to mark the occasion. Attendees will enjoy a selection of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, welcome bubbles and a cash bar while mingling with LVI alumni and other Vancouver Island businesses and organizations.

LVI alumni will share impactful stories, and guest speaker Clemens Rettich will discuss the changing face of leadership. Rettich, a partner at Beaton Rettich Waters, is also a professor in organizational behaviour and leadership at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria. Clemens will help attendees envision the impact of leadership, focusing on how leaders manage themselves, support others, and contribute to their communities for a better world.

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog commended LVI for 20 years of success in the Central Island area.

“So many times over the years, I have encountered LVI alumni who have risen far in whatever walk of life they have chosen,” he said. “Twenty years of success is proven in all the incredible leaders whose careers were shaped by LVI. The result, all our communities are so much better.”

Thompson said the event on April 24 will be an incredible opportunity to experience the energy and impact of LVI firsthand.

“Attendees will connect with inspiring leaders, hear powerful stories of growth and transformation, and build valuable relationships,” he said. “This event will be a meaningful and engaging experience.”

Tickets are $75, with 50 per cent of the event's net proceeds being allocated to LVI scholarships for individuals and organizations that will benefit from future programs.
