PHOTOS: Residents get growing with Victoria spring seedling handouts

City hands out 52,500 spring seedlings, plus 5,818 for the Harvest and Share Food Relief Society

With the end of spring rapidly approaching, the City of Victoria officially doled out all its first seedings of the year to help get residents growing.

Each year, the city distributes approximately 100,000 seedlings and delivers more than 700 cubic yards of soil-building materials in partnership with 67 organizations as part of its Get Growing program.

The seedlings are grown in the city nursery in Beacon Hill Park and distributed in partnership with community organizations. Soil-building materials are generated through parks operations.

This year, the city handed out 52,500 spring seedlings through myriad community groups. Another 5,818 were grown for the Harvest and Share Food Relief Society that grows at Government House then distributes produce through local food banks and community kitchens.

Started in 2020, Victoria’s Get Growing program helps distribute seedlings and soil-building materials to residents who face barriers to growing their own food.

Summer seedlings will be distributed between July 29 and Aug. 16 with fall soil-building materials issued Sept. 19 to 27.
