National White Cane week is Feb. 6-12, and on Feb. 5, the Canadian Council of the Blind 100 Mile House & District Chapter White Cane Club will have the distinction of hosting the largest White Cane event in British Columbia scheduled for that week.

It will be a day-long open house held at the 100 Mile Community Hall with a lot of interesting things going

on to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary as part of the South Cariboo community.

People will be able to strap on a pair of vision distorting

goggles and experience what it’s

like to do everyday tasks with visual impairment.

A variety of amazing visual aids and assistive devices will be on display and representatives

from Canadian Council of the

Blind, along with representatives from developers of assistive technologies for vision, Dr. Specs Optical and 100 Mile Vision Care Centre will be there, too.

There will also be a toonie auction,

live music, lunch, 50/50 draw and a draw for a free pair of glasses courtesy of Dr. Specs.

Lori Fry, secretary of the local White Cane chapter, says it will be a family day and a day to educate people of all ages on the many aspects of vision loss.

Hours for the open house are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there is no admission charge.
