Nanaimo residents will be able to enjoy new enhancements at Westwood Lake this weekend.
In a press release, City of Nanaimo announced that Westwood Lake Park's first beach is re-opening for Victoria Day long weekend. Among the improvements are a larger and more accessible beach area, more seating and picnic areas, pedestrian and cycling connections and an upgraded boat launch.
In addition, new foliage and trees have been planted and decking down to the sand has been constructed. A playground at second beach is expected to open in the coming weeks, with swings and a kitchen-like play area.
Charlotte Davis, city deputy director of parks and natural areas, said she was happy to see the "high-quality outdoor recreation space" nearing completion.
"The redesigned beach offers something for everyone and showcases what’s possible when thoughtful design is paired with Nanaimo’s natural beauty," she said in the release. "We're excited to see the final touches completed later this summer and encourage everyone to visit and enjoy Westwood Lake Park this May long weekend."
More work is ongoing, including universal accessible washrooms and lockers, signage, public art, garbage receptacles and even more seating, and the work is expected by complete the end of July. The city thanks park visitors for their patience as the final touches are finished.
Total project budget is $3.8 million, the city said.
