Lone Butte fire callouts needless

“No embers or other burning materials.” That is what the sign states at the Lone Butte refuse transfer station on Highway 24.

But, somehow, even with a large, block letter sign, some people either don’t read it, or don’t realize they shouldn’t throw burning items into the dumpster.

The Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department wasted valuable time and resources dealing with yet another unnecessary fire on the morning of Jan. 28.

Fire chief Mike Collinge was very concerned that if a serious life-threatening situation had arisen in that time period, they would have had to split their resources.

To properly dispose of ashes and embers from a wood stove or fireplace, he notes they need to be placed in a metal container, away from any buildings or combustibles to cool for several days before being emptied into a dumpster or garbage container.

Anything short of that can still flare up and cause a fire, Collinge adds.

On another note, we also need to dispose of large items at the proper landfill sites and not just drop them off outside of the share shed.

However, junk is junk and garbage is garbage, and an extra 10-minute drive to the Watch Lake landfill to dispose of broken furniture or appliances or just plain garbage will allow us to keep our share sheds.

New executive

The Lone Butte Fish and Wildlife Association (LBFWA) held its annual

general meeting on Jan. 27.

The LBFWA is a firearms-orientated group that maintains an outdoor gun range, which includes trap, handgun, small bore and large rifle gun bays.

Members hold firearm competitions and educate newcomers by using the Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Program (CORE).

A group of about 30 members voted in Brian Williams as president, Malcolm Cattanach as vice-president, Connie Williams as secretary and Sandi Cattanach as treasurer. Thirteen directors were also voted in for various positions.

George Ostoforoff was voted in as a public-relations director, a first-time position that the LBFWA felt was needed. George can be contacted at 395-4027 or ostos@shaw.ca for any information on the association.

Fishing derby

Results have been posted for the Horse Lake Fishing Derby held Jan. 30.

With near -30C temperatures greeting the eager fishers, they were glad to

see the bright sun, which brought some relief from the bitter cold.

All classifications of fish were caught, soup and chili were eaten and all had a good time.

School days

Wrestling and basketball continue to be the activities of choice for students at Horse Lake Elementary School.

Some students participated in the Smackdown wrestling competition in Williams Lake on Jan. 29, bringing home quite a few medals. Their next big event will be WrestleMania at Peter Skene Ogden Senior Secondary on Feb. 18.

I’m sure none of the students will forget the upcoming ProD day on Feb. 11 and the Grade 7 students are eagerly looking forward to their ski trip to Mt. Timothy on Feb. 21. The school is accepting applications for kindergarten students until March 15.

OUT Group

Lone Butte’s Other Unusual Talents (OUT) group held its first Thursday morning get together of 2011 and already have plans made for the next couple of sessions.

On Feb.17, they will be doing origami, while March 3 will find them making a pair of quilted potholders. There is a small fee for each craft to cover supplies and there are always goodies and coffee to go with the good company.

They meet the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Lone Butte Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact Tracey Lervik at 250-706-7411.

Celebrations

Birthday wishes go out to Brian Lambert on Feb. 14 from his family.
