A ribbon-cutting occurred Sunday, June 29 when the 108 Lions handed over their gazebo to the 108 Mile Green Belt Commission. Participating in the ribbon cutting were Barry Porter, Greenbelt, from left, Ingrid Meyer, Greenbelt and 108 Lions, Herb Carter, Greenbelt President, Laura Oliffe, 108 Lions President, Kevin Oliffe, 108 Lions, Steve Boden, 108 Lions, and Mike Marcuzzi , 108 Lions.

Residents and visitors continue to enjoying a gazebo built by members of the 108 Mile Lions Club.

A Lions Club project, the gazebo was built to celebrate 100 years of Lionism from 1920 to 2020.

On Sunday, June 29, the Lions handed the gazebo over to the 108 Mile Green Belt.

Main donations from United Concrete and 100 Mile Timber Mart made the project possible, coupled with the efforts of Lions Club members Steve Boden, Mike Marcuzzi, Don and Donna White, Ingrid Meyer, Kevin Oliffe, Barry Porter, Gil Vidler and Dean Julsrud.

“It was quite an endeavour for them to do that,” said Al Richmond who has lived at 108 Mile since 1976.

Richmond said the gazebo is being used for picnics and different things at the beach if the weather is inclement.

“Some use it to get out of the sun. There are not a lot of trees down there. Or if it is raining they use it to get out of the rain.”

The beach is well-used, he added, noting there will be playground equipment going in there in the next few weeks, including some large skidder tires for children to climb on.

Over the years playground equipment has been put in but there is now a desire to do more improvements, Richmond said.

When asked about the health of the lake, Richmond responded it has been good.

“We have lake weed in there again because levels are low and the weeds are more apparent at the surface, but generally we’ve had no concerns with respect to the quality of the lake," he said.
