Curious Comicon drew cosplayers and comic book enthusiasts to Country Club Centre this past weekend.
The event Saturday, May 3, celebrated comic book and pop culture while raising money for the Nanaimo Youth Services Association. Organizers estimated 5,000 people attended throughout the day, many in costume as their favourite comic book, video game and movie characters.
Rob McKee, Curious Comics manager and non-profit Curious ComiCon Convention Society board director, expressed amazement at the costumes.
"I've seen a really good Sauron, from Lord of the Rings. It was incredible, it looked like right out of the movie when he's on the battlefield," McKee said. "And then there's a guy dressed as Batman and it looks like it's came right off the movie set … It's pretty incredible what these guys can do."
McKee was grateful to attendees and "thrilled" with the turnout.
"I'm just so happy that people are willing to come out and support us and help us to raise money for charity," he said. "I can't thank Nanaimo enough. [It's] an amazing community that is very giving and caring."
