Dogs and their humans showed up in packs to the Pet Appreciation Day held April 24 at Total Pet.

The event was all about appreciating the animals that bring comfort to people’s lives.

While the weather wasn’t always co-operating, animal lovers of all ages came out to celebrate their companions.

Maverick Farms Meat and Livestock hosted a petting zoo for people to meet chickens, bunnies and sheep, some of whom were rescues.

All proceeds from the event were donated to the B.C. SPCA.

As of April 24, the store had raised just under $1,800 for the SPCA during Pet Appreciation Month, with just over $1,000 coming from the event itself. A silent auction and raffle were set up at the event.

“We’re always hoping to raise as much as we can,” says Shannon Aietan, a Total Pet employee and one of the organizers.

“We enjoyed having everyone come and support not only a local store but something that is near and dear to our heart.”

Aietan was dressed up as a dog in a mascot costume during the activities.

“We enjoyed having anybody who came and I enjoyed bouncing around with the dogs,” she says with a laugh.

Aietan, alongside her canine friends, also participated in the agility course set up in the grass, where dogs could test their skills.

Sparky the dog, the 100 Mile House Fire Rescue Mascot, also made an appearance and tested the agility course.

Children could have their faces painted like their favourite pets, as well as participate in pet-themed games for a variety of prizes.

“I have two cats from the SPCA,” says Aietan. “We have a love for what they do.”
