Raising fish out of Sheridan Lake at the Highway 24 Interlakes Lions Club ice-fishing derby on Feb. 20 will do double duty as it is also raising money for the Easter Seals children’s charity.
The entry fee is $5, which opens the door to a chance at winning cash prizes of $200, $150, $100, $60 and $40 for the heaviest fish caught.
There is a separate category for youth under 16 years with prizes of $150, $110, $80, $60 and $20. Every fish caught will get a prize of some sort.
Weigh-in and registration is at the Boulanger Road access off of West Sheridan Road.
At the site, people will be able to purchase burgers and coffee, and for those who don’t want to leave their ice-fishing hole, food will be delivered onto the ice if requested.
There will even be volunteers on hand to shuttle people to a spot on the ice by snowmobile or ATV, and if need be, they will drill a fishing hole too, says Stan Matthews, one of the key organizers.
“We’ll do it all for free.”
Registration for the derby can also be done through Matthews during random hours at Save-On-Foods.
He will be set up in the entranceway of the store on most days leading up to the derby.
The fishing derby runs in conjunction with the Lions Club Snowarama Snowmobile Ride, which is slated for Feb. 27.
Last year, the combined events brought in $20,736.00 for Easter Seals children’s charities.
Cash donations for Snowarama are being taken by mail and tax receipts will be issued for those of $25 or more.
People can send their donations to 7659 Larson Rd.; Lone Butte, B.C.; V0K 1X1.
