After having to cancel last year’s ice-fishing derby due to poor ice, Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department Society was delighted to go ahead this year— with great ice and great weather on Saturday, Feb. 15.
It was said that the first fish was weighed in around 1:30 p.m., so it was a very s-l-o-w fish day with only one rainbow, no kokanee and no burbot!
Lake trout winners comprised: first, Ivan Swakum with his 10 pound 10 ounce specimen; followed by Vicki Geier, Ian Wall and Teresa Domino. The lone rainbow came in with Adam Wick.
Nine-year-old Cowan Hughes won the first children’s prize with his laker and seven-year-old Stan Domino took second with his own laker.
In the all-cash raffle, C. Meyers of Bridge Lake won $500; Deka’s Curtis Aubin won $300; and Gary Desjardine of the 108 won $200.
Some 250 people came out to enjoy the prize ceremony and refreshments. Special thanks go to Ken Kineshanko for providing coffee and hot chocolate by donation to Deka’s VFD.
The society is most appreciative of local businesses and individuals whose “incredible generosity and support provided a huge selection of prizes” for both fishing and the nearly 100 door prizes.
Warmest thanks must also go to perennial organizers of the derby, Tom & Patty Nash, and their volunteer helpers.
