Around100 people walked, ran or rode bikes to help raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada on May 25.
Over $20,000 was raised in Campbell River, adding to the $2 million raised across the country. The walk took place in 70 locations across Canada. Locally, the walk began and ended at Ecole Willow Point.
Morgan Hargrave hosted the event and Kim Wood who has cystic fibrosis said how grateful she is to have the support of sponsors, participants and volunteers who made the event possible. There were some special activities for children including Shoo Shoo the Clown, Sharon Turner, crafts and activities hosted by the Kinettes and entertainment by magician, Russ Wagg.
Cystic Fibrosis is a rare, fatal disease and recent advancements have brought life-changing medicines within reach for many, but not all. Funds raised through the Walk will support CF research for the next vital treatment breakthrough. Wood said she is alive today thanks to funds raised at events like this and the people who support them.
Tim Hortons was on hand serving hot drinks and a delicious barbecue lunch was served by Campbell River Kinsmen and Dairy Queen. The food was provided by Dairy Queen, Thrifty Foods, Discovery Foods, Old Dutch and Coca Cola. A water and goodie station along the walk was hosted by CARSTAR Rich’s Autobody. All in One Party Rentals kindly provided tent, tables and chairs. Citizens on Patrol did a great job of keeping participants safe.
An added fundraising tool this year was a mystery auction with auction items donated by London Drugs, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware Central Builders, Thrifty Foods, Campbell River Garden Centre, Compass Dental, Kradles, More Eatery, Pollen Sweaters, Thong’s Jewellery, Storey Creek Golf Course, Willow Point Pharmasave and Home Depot.
Goodie bags thanks to Strathcona Gardens, McDonald’s, Shoppers Drug Mart Tyee Plaza, Tim Hortons and CARSTAR were provided to all the children who participated.
Door prizes were provided by Boston Pizza and Tim Hortons. Additional funds were contributed by McDonald’s, Costco, MOWI and Discovery Laser Skin Care. Additional thanks go to Grant Signs and River Ink Printing and Signs.
Adele Romano a strong supporter of the cystic fibrosis cause held a garage sale on Saturday, May 24 and raised an extra $1,600 for the walk.
The walk committee is hopeful that people will continue to make online contributions at walk.cysticfibrosis.ca until August 31.
